The seasonal influenza vaccine has been provided routinely in Canada since 1946. Although there can be side effects, most people who receive the vaccine have either no side effects or mild effects. Are You At Risk?

The following people are not more likely to get the flu. However, they are at a higher risk of potential complications if they do get sick:

  • Children under 5 years of age
  • Women who are pregnant
  • People with chronic conditions such as:
    • Heart disease
    • Liver disease
    • Kidney disease
    • Blood disorders
    • Diabetes
    • Severe obesity
    • Asthma and chronic lung disease
    • Neurological disorders
    • Cancer or immune-compromising conditions
  • Aboriginal people
  • People 65 years of age and older
  • People who are residents of nursing homes or other chronic-care facilities
